Early Life and Youth Career
Born in England in 2003, Hughes developed his footballing talent at two of the country’s most prestigious academies—Manchester City and Liverpool before moving to join Wigan Athletic’s youth setup as an Under-14 player in 2017.
He became a key player in the Latics youth setup and captained Wigan’s U18 side during the 2021–22 season, and would go on to sign his first professional contract with the club on the 7th of September 2021.

Club Career
Wigan Athletic
Charles Hughes made his professional debut for Wigan Athletic on the 25th of January 2022 in an EFL Trophy match against Arsenal U21s, helping his side secure a 1–0 victory. His league debut followed later that year on Boxing Day against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.
By the 2023–24 season, Charles Hughes had established himself as one of Wigan’s key players and on the 8th of August 2023, at just 19 years old, he captained the senior team for the first time in a Carabao Cup match against Wrexham. He would continue to wear the armband on numerous occasion that season, most notably in an FA Cup third-round clash against Manchester United. Hughes would also cap off an outstanding season with a nomination for the EFL Young Player of the Year 2023–24.

Hull City
On 16 August 2024, Hughes secured a move to Hull City, signing a four-year contract with the Championship side. He made his debut for the Tigers on the 5th of October 2024, coming on as a half-time substitute in a 4–0 away loss to Norwich City and has since become a key part of the team.
International Career
Charles Hughes received his first international call-up in November 2023, making his debut for the England U20s in a 3–0 defeat to Italy at the Eco-Power Stadium. His influence in the squad grew quickly, and on the 7th of June 2024, he captained England’s U20 side in a match against Sweden U21s. Four days later, he featured for 70 minutes in another international match against the Republic of Ireland U21s.

Playing Style
Charles Hughes is a commanding centre-back known for his composure on the ball, no-nonsense approach, and ability to play out from the back. His exceptional passing range allows him to start attacking plays from deep positions, making him a valuable asset in modern possession-based systems.
Defensively, he is strong in duels, reads the game well, and has shown remarkable leadership qualities from a young age. Additionally, he has the versatility to play in defensive midfield, further highlighting his versatility and great technical ability.
